Bride holding a white bouquet, wearing a lace wedding dress with a low open back

Your dress is sorted. Now comes the part nobody warns you about: what goes underneath it. The right wedding dress bra depends on your neckline, your back and the fabric, and a normal bra won't work with half the dresses out there.

The short answer for a low-back or backless gown is a stick-on bra with no straps and no back band. Our backless bridal bras are made for exactly that. Below, we go through every option, with the good and the not so good, so you can choose with a clear head.

What to wear under your wedding dress: a quick guide

Your dress What to wear
Backless or low back A stick-on backless bra
Deep plunge neckline A plunge backless bra with no clip in the centre
Thin, light or sheer fabric A smooth nude bra in your skin tone
Corseted bodice Often no bra at all, as the boning gives you shape
You want a prettier look Ivory or white lace cups

Bridal bra options for a backless or low-back wedding dress

A backless wedding dress is gorgeous, but it rules out the classic bridal lingerie. A back band and straps would show. You have four options, so here are the pros and cons of each.

Going without a bra

If you're happy with a smaller bust, going bra-free is an option. It's one less thing to think about on the day.

  • The upside: nothing to buy, and it can feel liberating.
  • The catch: it can feel exposed if the neckline is low or loose, or if the fabric is thin or sheer. It isn't an option for a bigger bust.

Cups sewn into the dress

Your seamstress may offer to sew cups into the lining.

  • The upside: it saves you a purchase.
  • The catch: sewn-in cups are thin and give little shape or support. They also move with the dress, so a forward lean can show more than you'd like.

A backless bodysuit

This is one piece that combines a bra and shapewear.

  • The upside: bust support and tummy smoothing together.
  • The catch: it doesn't suit a sheer bodice, it can be pricey, and it can get hot, especially at a summer wedding.

A stick-on backless bra

A stick-on backless bra for a wedding dress is two soft cups with a skin-friendly adhesive and a clip at the front. You stick them on, angle them up and in, and clip them together. You get lift and cleavage with nothing across your back or shoulders.

  • The upside: it stays put all day and all night, through the dancing, the heat and the hugs, as long as your skin is clean and dry. You can wear it again after the wedding for summer outfits and date nights.
  • The catch: it takes a couple of practice goes to get the position right. It can work for fuller busts if your bust is firm, but if your bust has lost a lot of firmness you won't get much lift. See the band limits for fuller busts before you order.

Which stick-on bridal bra suits your dress?

Ivory and white lace, for a pretty bridal look

Lace cups look lovely if a little peeks out, and they feel right for the day. Styles like Full Bloom and Mrs come in ivory and white lace. Several of our bridal bras have matching lace knickers, too.

Push-up, for a fuller shape

If you'd like a bit more up top, a push-up backless bra has extra padding at the base of each cup for a fuller, rounder shape. It suits an A or B cup best. The padding makes it slightly heavier, so it's not the best match for a bigger bust.

Lifting, for a bigger bust

Our lifting backless bras are lightweight and thinly padded, so you get support without bulk. They're the pick if you're a C cup or above, or if you'd like more support than you used to get.

Plunge, for a deep neckline

A deep V neckline needs a bra that stays out of sight. Our plunge backless bras are made from lightweight, breathable fabric, and Knock Out and Black Onyx have no clip in the centre. They keep everything in place without silicone.

Nude, for thin or sheer fabric

A nude backless bra disappears under light fabric when you pick the tone closest to your skin. Not sure which? Our Find your nude page helps you compare the three shades. If your neckline is very low, go for a plunge style instead.

Bridal lingerie for a tight-fitting or sheer dress

With a close-fitting dress, you want seamless. If your dress is corseted, the boning probably gives you all the shape you need, so you may not want a bra at all. If the fabric is thin and there's no corset, a smooth nude bra is the safest bet.

For knickers, pick seamless, no VPL knickers in a nude shade. If you plan to wear shapewear, be kind to yourself. You'll have it on all day, so choose something you can breathe, eat cake and dance in.

Getting your InvisiBra size right

Your InvisiBra size isn't the same as your usual bra size. Use our backless bra size guide to find yours in about 30 seconds. Between sizes? Go down one. A snug fit gives you more lift, and the one fit to avoid is too big.

If you've lost weight since you chose your dress, measure again closer to the wedding. And do try your bra on well before the day, so there are no surprises.

Your wedding-day checklist

  1. Order early. Give yourself time to try it on and practise.
  2. Check your size. Use the size guide, and go down one if you're between sizes.
  3. Practise the position. Angle the cups upward and inward before you clip them together.
  4. Start with clean, dry skin. Skip moisturiser, oil and body spray where the cups sit.
  5. Keep it for later. Clean it after wearing, then pop it back in its hard clear case so it's ready for the honeymoon.

Frequently asked questions

What bra do you wear with a backless wedding dress?

A stick-on backless bra. It has no straps and no back band, so nothing shows. Choose ivory or white lace for a bridal look, or nude if your dress is sheer.

Will a stick-on bra stay on all day at my wedding?

Yes. Put it on clean, dry skin with no moisturiser, oil or body spray and it stays put all day and all night. The adhesive handles sweat, heat and movement.

Can I wear a stick-on bra with a bigger bust?

You can, if your bust is firm, and a lifting style is the one to choose. Your band size needs to be within the limits in our fuller-bust guide.

Can I reuse my wedding dress bra?

Yes. Clean it after every wear and you'll get 30+ wears out of it, so it works for summer dresses and date nights long after the wedding.

Do I need matching bridal knickers?

You don't, but it's a nice touch. You'll find lace knickers for several of our bridal bras in the bridal collection, and our bra and knicker sets pair a bra with colour-matched knickers.

Ready to choose your wedding dress bra?

Your dress should be the only thing people notice. Shop our backless bridal bras, find your size in the size guide, and if you're still unsure, message us your dress style and we'll help you pick.

Plunge Backless Bras

Got a deep V or a plunging neckline? A plunge backless bra is made for it. The soft fabric cups have no centre clip, so nothing shows between them, even in the lowest dress you own.

Why brides love it: it stays in place all day, it's light and breathable, and you can wear it again long after the wedding.

Good to know: the cups are thinly padded, so they shape and lift rather than add a cup size. Knock Out (nude) and Black Onyx (black) come in InvisiBra Size A to D. Fuller bust? Read our fuller-bust guide first, babe.

Nude pushup backless bra InvisiBra

Nude Backless Bra

A nude stick-on bra is the safest bet under a wedding dress, especially in white, ivory or thin fabric. Pick a lifting or push-up style.

Why brides love it: it disappears under your dress. Our nude styles come in light, medium and dark skin tones, so match yours. And nude goes with everything you'll wear after the big day.

Good to know: nude styles have a centre clip, so if the middle of your neckline dips really low, go for a plunge style instead. Low neckline but not that low? Go down one InvisiBra size.

Bridal lingerie for tight fitting dresses

What you need here is seamless support. If your dress is corseted, then you probably don't need a bra at all as the boning in the dress will give you plenty of cleavage already. If your dress isn't corseted and features thin material, we would suggest our nude backless bra for a smooth seamless support. For undies, you should wear no VPL nude underwear or shape wear if you need something to hold you in. A word of caution about shape wear: We know it's tempting to wear something really tight to give you a really flat tummy, but do bear in mind that you'll be wearing it all day. You want to be able to enjoy yourself on one of the best days of your life. What you don't want, is to be so constricted by your shape wear that you can hardly breathe and have any fun. So choose a style that's not too restrictive like the Spanx Higher Power Short.

Other considerations when picking your bridal lingerie
We think it's important you pick something that will get used again. Weddings are expensive, so the more you can reuse something after the wedding the better. This is why an InvisiBra is a great investment as it can be reused again with your summer or party or date night outfits.

Always try on your bridal lingerie before the day to ensure that the sizing is right and it feels good on. The last thing you need on your wedding day is realising that your bra is the wrong size. We always recommend brides to get measured to ensure you're getting the right bra. If you've lost weight, it's important to measure closer to the wedding to ensure the right size.
